Happy Birthday Miranda...I remember a long time ago when friendship went on and on and you never had any reason to doubt it. Even when things went wrong, best friends were there for you. They protected you from the Bad Things: from the bullies who hurt you; from the bad feelings that consumed you. You were safe if you had a best friend. You helped them with school work and they kept away the ones who hated those good at such things.
Then we all grew up and the rules changed. We drifted apart and the Bad Things won. But, you know what, despite all that, I believed in the friendship we had shared. I believed that in the end, nothing had changed. But everything had.
Now I'm in a similar place. All alone, with no best friend to protect me. Yet, most of the time, I wouldn't change the way things turned out. I'm pretty tough now; I learned to take care of myself, and I don't need anyone else to see me through (though having a boyfriend is pretty sweet).
So, where ever you are, what ever you are doing, I hope you're having a great party tonight, with your husband (also a James, hooray for good taste and irony), and maybe some chibis on the way (or here already even). Happy Birthday Miranda, my best friend, and thanks for teaching me how to be strong.
